The short answer
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is making your business easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and quote: ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and the rest. For a small business it comes down to published prices, plain answers to real questions, a complete Google Business Profile and nothing blocking the AI crawlers. You need it if people in your area are already asking an AI who to call, and in Brisbane they are.
What an answer engine is
An answer engine is anything that answers the question instead of handing you ten links. ChatGPT is one. So is the AI Overview (the summary Google now puts above its results) and AI Mode (Google's chat-style search). Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot are others. When someone types "who does website design for small businesses on Brisbane's northside", these tools read a handful of pages, write one answer, and name two or three businesses in it.
That changes where the work happens. With ordinary SEO (search engine optimisation) you were trying to be one of the ten blue links. With AEO you are trying to be one of the two or three names in the answer, which is a smaller door with less traffic through it, so the facts about your business need to be easy to find and easy to trust.
Why it matters now, with my own numbers
I rebuilt my own website in October 2026, and the first three weeks of Search Console data showed something I did not expect. The site had 210 impressions (times it appeared in a search) and only 3 clicks, which is normal for a new site. What stood out was the shape of the searches. "Answer engine optimisation Brisbane" appeared 18 times. One search was a full sentence, "who does answer engine optimisation for small businesses in Australia?", and the site sat at position 1 for it. People are typing questions the way they would ask a person, because that is how they talk to the AI tools, and Google is matching them to pages that answer plainly.
The wider numbers say the same thing. SparkToro's 2026 study of US Google searches found 68 percent ended without a click on any website, up from 60 percent two years earlier, and Ahrefs measured a 58 percent drop in clicks for the top result when an AI Overview sits above it. So the answer is being read in the search result, or in the chat window, and fewer people arrive at the site at all. If your business is not in that answer, it is not in the conversation.
What AEO actually involves
Most of this is ordinary good practice done properly, which is the part the agencies selling "AEO packages" tend to leave out. Google published its own guide in May 2026 and its line is blunt: the AI features run on the same ranking systems as normal search, so a page that cannot rank normally will not be quoted either. The things that move the needle are:
- Published prices. An engine asked "how much does a website cost in Brisbane" quotes the sites that say a number. Mine says from $1,200 for a static site, so it can be quoted.
- Plain answers to real questions. A short paragraph that answers the question in its first two sentences, under a heading that reads like the question. Not a 2,000-word essay that gets to the point on page three.
- A complete Google Business Profile. For local searches the engines lean on the Business Profile for hours, services, reviews and area, so an empty or out-of-date profile is a missing fact.
- The facts in a form a machine can read. Schema markup (a hidden label on the page that says "this is a price", "this is a service area") and consistent business details everywhere they appear.
- Nothing blocking the crawlers. OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic each have a crawler, and a firewall or a default setting can block them without anyone noticing.
- Reviews that say what you did. The engines read reviews as evidence, so a review that names the service ("built our booking system") is worth more than "great guy".
What it does not involve: a special file that makes ChatGPT notice you, keyword stuffing, or rewriting every page for the robots. Google has said in writing that none of that helps.
Whether you need it yet
Yes, now. People are already asking the AI tools who to call, and a business that is not in the answer is not in the running, however good it is. I do not say that lightly, because most of what I sell can wait until a business is ready for it. This cannot, as the engines are building their picture of who does what in Brisbane right now, and it is easier to be in that picture early than to be added later.
The honest test is to ask the question yourself. Open Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity and type what a customer would type, "best [your trade] near [your suburb]", and see who is named. If it is not you, that is the gap.
What the engines reward when you ask
I ran that test for a Brisbane trade on 3 November 2026 to see how the engines choose. Google gave a map pack of three local businesses, each with a phone number showing and between 41 and 54 reviews. Perplexity named four businesses and recommended one, and it said why: that business lists its suburbs by name, publishes fixed prices, and has 86 Google reviews. The engine quoted all three facts back as its reasons.
Read that list again, because it is the list from the section above: named areas, published prices, reviews. The engine did not care about anyone's design awards or how long they had been in business. It picked the business whose facts were easiest to find and check, which is good news, because every one of those facts is something you can publish this month.
What it costs with me
The first step is free. The Free Audit checks what Google and the AI engines can see of your site and gives you your three biggest gaps in plain English, within three business days. If you want the whole picture, the Full Audit is $750 one-off and comes with a written plan.
Ongoing, the work sits inside my SEO + AEO management plans on the Digital Marketing page: Manage: Local is $150 a month and keeps the Business Profile, the FAQs and the on-page facts current, with a short monthly scorecard; Manage: Growth is $300 a month and adds two optimised articles or AEO answer pages each month, which is exactly what you are reading now. Prices are as at November 2026 and are published on the site, so you will not get a different number on the phone.
Where to start
Run the free audit, or ask me the question on a call. Either way you leave knowing whether the engines can see you, and what I would fix first.
